Copina Co. was founded in 2020 by San Francisco native Carolyn Yachanin. The company started as a women’s wellness blog in 2016, which was when Carolyn began to experience severe health complications such as cystic scarring acne and digestion issues. She was fed up with being prescribed harsh medications like acutane and antibiotics, none of which ever helped, and her frustrations led her to start writing about holistic nutrition and plant-based eating. While blogging, Carolyn stumbled upon the practice of Ayurveda and the idea that skin health was connected to gut health. She grew increasingly interested in Ayurveda as she learned more, ultimately deciding to reach out to a doctor who specialized in herbal and internal medicine.

This doctor prescribed Carolyn a variety of plant acids and herbs that were targeted at improving not only skin texture, but also gut health issues. Carolyn started switching out her coffee for matcha and integrating plant botanicals and adaptogens into her diet. Her skin started improving, and she felt healthier than ever before. Realizing the true impact of plant medicine on her health, Carolyn wanted to share her discovery with more people. She consulted her doctor on creating a vegan collagen alternative and connected with herbalists to work on sourcing and dosing. Many months of product development later, Carolyn finalized her formulation and launched Copina Co. Her products quickly amassed a following, securing placements in Urban Outfitters and Erewhon Market just five months later.
